The AJL (Association of Jewish Libraries) Mentoring Program endeavors to assist fledgling Jewish librarians find the answers they need through a personal relationship with an experienced librarian best suited to help them. We strive to match library type, classification system and automation software, as well as geographic region as much as possible. The committee has compiled a bibliography of mentoring resources. As we approach the annual convention, we of the committee felt it a good time to remind our members or prospective members of our presence in the community. Please refer to Lani's open invitation to join our program which appears in our sidebar. One need not be present in Cleveland to take advantage of our services. Simply fill out the questionnaire and get it back to us, either by email or fax. Furthermore, please indicate whether or not you would be willing to communicate electronically. (Note: Although many of you will prefer one-on-one, in-person relationships, it is not always desirable or possible. ) The mentorship program is a valuable way for either library students or new librarians to grow and advance in the profession. It is also a golden opportunity for experienced librarians to share their expertise with others in information management as well as issues of employment. Either way, both learner and mentor join in shaping the future of librarians and librarianship. One's level of involvement may vary from casual advisement and coaching to more formal consultancy and even Board of Education practicum supervision. In the mid-90's, I did my school media specialist practicum at Ramaz Upper in New York with Esther Nussbaum. Need I say more? Today I am an academic librarian and mentor new librarians in both Jewish and non-Jewish environments. Recently I counselled an LIS graduate from Ohio who was relocating and job hunting in Baltimore. I hope that this talented young woman will accept my invitation to share her experiences in this blog. Please feel free to submit comments and anecdotes to us. We would love to hear from you.

Sincerely,

Stephanie (Sara Leah) Gross

Watch a clip from the co-chair:

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v10.nonxt1.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D1e17f93dc68cfce5%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1331482266%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D1B2AA1DCC0F740DB56A436D7524DB805C6CDA878.4EA6016E6ECD21A6AE51B2F8845E6B85A9FC132D%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D1e17f93dc68cfce5%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DAVuLcTUfaHKopAcy4EuufxURv6A&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

Stephanie L.
